REPAIR AND REHABILITATION ACTIVITIES
One of the most important shotcrete applications is its use for concrete and masonry structure rehabilitation and reinforcement. Natural and industrial impacts (aggressive liquid and gaseous media, low temperatures, fire hazards, etc.), as well as construction and development faults cause destruction of structures: protective layer destruction and reinforcement metal corrosion, crack formation, erosion and disintegration of concrete structure, reduction of cross-sectional area, strength reduction. By using shotcrete it is possible to repair such damage, as well as to prevent its reoccurrence. However, rehabilitation scope shall be determined by specialists after preliminary inspection of a structure.
The most important rehabilitation success factor is impermeability and monolithic behaviour of existing concrete and new shotcrete coating. In order to ensure maximum adhesion, existing concrete is subject to accurate preliminary preparation - peeling removal, cleaning to intact concrete, metal reinforcement cleaning and moistening. In some cases, even maximum adhesion of existing concrete to shotcrete is not enough to counter evolving shear forces. It can occur, for example, during rehabilitation of columns, beams or floor slabs. In such cases, it is necessary to use additional metal reinforcement in order to counter transverse loads as well as to connect existing concrete reinforcement with shotcrete reinforcement.
It is possible to rehabilitate all types of concrete structures and to reinforce bearing masonry walls, including repairs of airport runways, dams, cooling towers, reservoirs, tunnel lining, hydraulic structures, bridges, etc using the described method.
